Dear Potential Natural Beekeeper,

As a child my father taught me how to keep bees using modern conventional methods, which he in turn had learnt from his father.

When I eventually left home I had nothing further to do with keeping bees. Shortly after that my father gave up beekeeping as well due to other commitments.

Fast-forward over thirty years (oh dear is it really that long ago?) I was sitting outside on a sunny summer afternoon when I happened to notice there were very few bees on the flowers in our garden.

Over the following weeks I looked around and found there were very few bees anywhere! I mentioned it to my father and he had apparently noticed the same thing.

I decided then and there to find out why.

Very much to my surprise I found that the conventional beekeeping methods I had been taught from a early age may well be part of the problem!

Conventional beekeeping can be regarded as the building up of an elaborate technique for the exploitation of a wild creature solely for profit.

The bee is still as wild as it was when it first evolved. It lives a highly complicated social life and all the efforts of man to control and manage the bee have to be kept in synchronisation with that system.

Co-operation with nature should be the keynote of successful bee keeping. Working with them, only deflecting and guiding the bees activities when necessary to ensure their survival rather than controlling and interfering with them using modern conventional beekeeping techniques.

Bees are mysterious creatures, what controls, guides and determines the seasonal activity of the bee colony is not really known. Bees have survived the extinction of the dinosaurs, survived continental drift, climate change, and were around while our earliest ancestors were swinging in trees! How many diseases and parasites evolved to threaten them in that time? Probably many, and they survived them all until now!

So what has changed? The decline started with the invention of the modern hive by Langstroth in 1860. He lived in a time swept up with concepts of industrialisation. Beekeepers were keen to apply those same industrial concepts to beekeeping. They measured their progress by greater yields. It was a time when nature was something to be conquered. By conquering nature some advantages were gained. However a price is always paid when man pushes the boundary of the natural balance of nature. In beekeeping, much was lost when man-made approximations replaced the bee’s natural brood nest.

Bees have lived with and provided us honey and wax for thousands of years. Strange they have suffered since man started to manipulate them on an industrial scale 150 years ago.
